The IMIN program can be hard to navigate – to help you with this, we give you our program guide!

1. Building Your Class Schedule! (click on me!)
This is a guide on possible ways to schedule your classes! To preface, there are many many ways of doing this so please keep that in mind as we go through this! Year 1 and Year 2 should be followed as they contain a lot of pre-requisite courses that are required for higher level courses but Year 3 and above give a lot of flexibility into how you can design your schedule.
Note: Classes in RED are CRITICAL TIMING classes – these are classes you should take if you would like to finish in 4 years (you need would to take 5 classes a term)
Year 1
BIOL: 107, 108 (offered in both terms)
CHEM: 101, 102, 261 (offered in both terms – would take 261 in the winter of Year 1)
MATH + STAT: MATH 134 and STAT 151 (offered in both terms)
Art Options (could take one per term)
Year 2
BIOL: 207, 208 (offered in both terms)
CHEM: 261 (if not done in 1st year), 263 (offered in both terms)
IMIN 200, MICRO 265, BIOCHEM 200 (IMIN is only offered in Winter but MICRO 265 and BIOCHEM 200 are offered in both terms)
CELL 201 or BIOL 201 (offered in both terms)
Art Options (could take one per term)
Year 3
GENET 270 or BIOCHEM 330 (start of BIOCHEM or GENET Pathway) (offered in both terms)
MMI 351 (Winter term only)
MMI 391 (Fall term only) or BIOL 391 (offered in both terms) – required for honours
IMIN: 324, 371 (Fall term only)
ZOOL 352 (Fall term only)
PHYSL 210 OR PHYSL 212 (Fall term only)/214 (Winter term only) OR ZOOL 241(Fall term only)/242 (Winter term only)
Note: It can be a lot to take IMIN 324, IMIN 371, and ZOOL 352 in the same term (offered only in the FALL term, so if you plan accordingly, you can split these classes between Year 3 and Year 4). Ideally you should take IMIN 371 in Year 3 since it’s a pre-requisite for higher level IMIN classes.
Year 4 – very flexible
GENET Pathway: GENET 304 (Fall term only) OR GENET 390 (Fall term only) OR MICRO 316 (Winter term only) BIOCHEM Pathway: BIOCHEM 430 (Fall term only) + (need BIOCHEM 320 to take, so that would be something else you need to also take alongside BIOCHEM 330)
MMI 499 or BIOL 499 (required for honours) – your Research Project
IMIN 452 (Winter term only)
As a good way to summarize this in a flow chart, here is something made by Dr. Patry, one of our advisors! Feel free to save the image and use it to help plan out your classes!

2. Getting Started in Research! (click on me!)
The first you might ask is how to do I go about starting a 499 or research in general?
- STEP 1: Start looking for PI’s (aka Principal Investigators) during the September-November the year before you start your 499 (so in your 3rd year reach out to a PI if you want to a 499 in your 4th year)
- STEP 2: Once you’ve picked some PI’s and lab’s you are interested in, send out an email to them
- What to include in this initial email:
- 1. Who you are (year of study, name)
- 2. Your interest in their work/how you found out about them (I’m interested in …) → Be sure to skim through their research papers and KNOW what they are researching as this will allow them to see if you are actually interested in what questions their lab asks
- End/close with asking if there are any opportunities in the lab currently/in the future
- Attach your CV (curriculum vitae) and Transcript → potentially for successful grant applications for your research projects
- What to include in this initial email:
For students interested in doing an MMI 499 – a good opportunity to see some of the work that the labs in the department do is the MMI Recruitment Event! This usually occurs at the end of November! This is a very good opportunity for 3rd years to reach out to professors as a lot of them are eager for MMI 499 students (that would usually start that summer)
